Why Use a Caged Bird Feeder?

A caged feeder is useful to deter birds such as pigeons, crows and starlings from stealing all the food from the smaller birds and bullying other birds. It also stops them from throwing it all over the floor. They also helps to deter squirrels, although this does not stop them completely all the time.

Caged feeders come in various shapes and sizes offering protection and slight coverage from any bad weather, as some of them have a roof like cover such as the Nuttery range. The mesh tends to be no wider than 1.5 inches and 2.5 inches high. This enables the smaller birds to come through the feeder without getting bullied away by any bigger birds. The more common shapes of these caged feeders are the oval and upright style ones. These feeders offer the birds enough room between cage and feeders to make the birds feel comfortable and not trapped.

1 - Minimizes Seed Wastage

The larger birds tend to kick out alot of seed from the feeder, meaning that it just drops to the floor and not everything that gets thrown out, gets eaten up by ground feeding birds.

2 - Protection Seed From Bad Weather

Some cages have a roof like cover which can help keep the seed protected from the horrible winter weather, helping it stay dry and not get clogged and /or mouldy.

The smaller the mesh size the less likely it is that the larger birds will be able to get through into the cage. The smalller birds however can easily manage these small holes and can feed safely without any worry of getting bullied off the feeder. If the seed tube itself is far enough away, squirrels will also struggle to get at it, meaning that they will eventually give up trying.

4 - Prevention of a Build up of Spilled Seed

Due to the feeder being open at the bottom, this allows the seed to fall through which stops the build up and stops any chance of rotting or mould.

What Birds Can Use a Caged Feeder?

Birds such as the blue and great tits, the finches, sparrows, siskins and even robins will all happily eat from these feeders. Larger birds such as pigeons, crows and other unwanted birds will not be able to reach the ports of the feeder. Woodpeckers however, may still be able to reach the feeder through the mesh due to their long beaks and gymnastic like talents.

Caged ground feeders are also a great feeding area for birds which like to feed from the ground. These birds tend to be fed with a ground feeder tray, and the cage over the top. This stops any larger birds and even cats and foxes getting to the food and stealing it before the smaller birds get their beaks in! Remember it can take the birds to get used to any new feeders, especially something like these as they can be quite big and bulky which can intimidate the smaller birds but once they get used to it, they will happily go inside and eat from it!
