How To Use Worm Casts
Worm casts boast a banquet of nutrients and beneficial microorganisms that can work wonders in your garden, not only outdoors...but indoors too!
Produced by earthworms as they digest organic matter, worm casts are prized for their ability to improve soil fertility, enhance plant growth, and promote overall garden health. Here are some ways to use worm casts in your garden:
1. As a soil amendment and conditioner
One of the primary ways to use worm casts in your garden is as a soil amendment and conditioner. All you need to do is simply mix in the worm casts with your garden soil, or use them as a top dressing. The fine texture of worm casts improves soil structure, enhancing aeration, water retention, and drainage, while also reducing soil compaction and erosion.
2. As a growing medium for seedlings
If you are looking to start seedlings off or maybe transplant them into a larger pot, worm casts can be used to create a nutrient-rich growing medium that promotes strong and healthy plant growth from the outset. By mixing in worm casts with potting soil, you will be able to provide young plants with a nutritious substrate that supports vigorous root development and minimizes transplant shock.
3. As a potting mix
For indoor gardening or container gardening enthusiasts, worm casts provide a valuable addition to potting mixes. Simply pop in your casts with the soil and you will create a fantastic blend of worm casts and compost. This nutrient-rich potting mix provides plants with a balanced supply of nutrients, moisture, and air, creating optimal growing conditions for indoor plants, herbs & vegetables.
4. Make worm tea!
You may have never heard of Worm Tea before, but we promise you it's been worth the wait to hear about it. You can mix your worm casts with water to use as a liquid fertliser. Simply mix 100ml of worm casts into 4.5 litres of water and leave for several days so that you can extract the beneficial nutrients. You will then be able to use the resulting liquid as a foliar spray or soil drench for your plants.
